How it's calculated

No black boxes — here is the exact math behind your estimate, so you can check it or adapt it for your own quote.

  1. 1Volume (ft³) = length × width × (thickness ÷ 12)
  2. 2Cubic yards = volume (ft³) ÷ 27
  3. 3Bags (80 lb) = ⌈ volume (ft³) ÷ 0.6 ⌉
  4. 4Cost = cubic yards × price per yard

Worked example

A 10 ft × 10 ft patio slab poured 4 inches thick.

Frequently asked questions

How many cubic yards of concrete do I need for a 10×10 slab?
A 10 ft × 10 ft slab at 4 inches thick is about 1.23 cubic yards (33.3 cubic feet). Most suppliers sell ready-mix by the yard and have a minimum order, so round up and add ~10% for spillage and uneven subgrade.
Should I use bags or order ready-mix?
Bagged concrete is practical up to roughly 1 cubic yard (about 45–60 bags). Beyond that, ordering ready-mix delivery is cheaper, faster, and gives a more consistent pour.
How thick should my slab be?
Patios and walkways are typically 4 inches. Driveways, garage floors, and anything carrying vehicles are usually 5–6 inches over a compacted gravel base.
Does this include rebar or a gravel base?
No — this estimate covers concrete volume and material cost only. Budget separately for gravel sub-base, rebar or wire mesh, forms, and labor.
