How it's calculated
No black boxes — here is the exact math behind your estimate, so you can check it or adapt it for your own quote.
- 1
Area = length × width - 2
Single tile area = (tile width ÷ 12) × (tile height ÷ 12) - 3
Tiles = ⌈ (area ÷ single tile area) × (1 + waste% ÷ 100) ⌉ - 4
Cost = tiles × price per tile
Worked example
A 10 ft × 8 ft floor using 12" × 12" tiles with 10% waste.

Frequently asked questions
How much tile overage should I order?
Add at least 10% for cuts and breakage, and 15% or more for diagonal patterns or rooms with many obstacles. Tile dye lots vary, so buying enough up front avoids mismatches later.
Does this include grout and thinset?
No — this is a tile-count and material estimate. Grout, thinset, spacers, and edge trim should be budgeted separately based on tile size and joint width.
Can I use rectangular tiles?
Yes. Enter the actual tile width and height in inches and the calculator handles non-square formats automatically.
