Asphalt is the default driveway surface across most of the country because it goes down in a day, costs less than concrete up front, and flexes with frost instead of cracking. What varies enormously between quotes is what happens below the black surface. A new asphalt driveway runs $8 to $15 per square foot installed in 2026, and the reason two bids on the same driveway can differ by 40 percent is almost always base depth.

What an asphalt driveway costs in 2026

Plan on $8 to $15 per square foot installed for a new driveway built from bare ground, which includes excavation, a compacted aggregate base, and 2 to 3 inches of compacted hot mix asphalt. In per-ton terms, hot mix delivered to a residential site runs $100 to $180 per ton, and on a small job contractors effectively bill $130 to $220 per ton once mobilization, equipment, and labor are spread across the tonnage.

Two common sizes to anchor against:

  • 20 × 30 ft (600 ft²), two cars: $4,800 to $9,000 new, about 11 tons of mix at 3 inches.
  • 12 × 100 ft (1,200 ft²), long rural drive: $9,600 to $18,000 new, about 22 tons of mix at 3 inches.

Almost every paving contractor also carries a mobilization minimum of $1,500 to $3,000. Moving a paver, a roller, and a crew to your address costs the same whether you need 8 tons or 30, which is why very small jobs price badly per square foot and why paving two neighboring driveways the same day can genuinely save both parties money.

The decision between overlay and replacement comes down to one question: are the failures on the surface or in the base? Straight-line cracks, raveling where the aggregate is coming loose, faded gray color, and minor surface depressions are surface problems and an overlay legitimately fixes them. Alligator cracking (interconnected cracks in a pattern like reptile skin), potholes that come back in the same place after every patch, and areas that visibly flex when a car drives over them are base failures. An overlay over a failed base is money set on fire; the same failure telegraphs through the new surface within two or three seasons.

Tear-out and disposal of old asphalt is its own line, typically $1.00 to $3.00 per square foot. Old asphalt is fully recyclable and most contractors haul it to a plant rather than a landfill, which is why the disposal number is lower than it would be for concrete. Ask whether the credit or reduced tipping fee is reflected in your quote.

Base preparation and thickness

The base carries the load. The asphalt is a wearing surface that spreads the load onto the base. Get that backwards and you will pay for the driveway twice.

A few specifics that belong in your quote:

  • Base aggregate is typically a dense-graded crushed stone with fines so it locks up under compaction, placed in 4-inch lifts and compacted each lift. Delivered stone runs $25 to $55 per ton. Installed and compacted, the base line usually works out to $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot at 6 to 8 inches. Size the tonnage yourself with the Gravel Calculator.
  • Compacted thickness versus laid thickness. Hot mix compacts about 20 to 25 percent. Three inches laid is roughly 2.3 inches finished. A bid that says “3 inches of asphalt” without saying compacted is a bid you should clarify in writing.
  • Tonnage math. Compacted hot mix weighs about 1.96 tons per cubic yard, or roughly 12 pounds per square foot per inch. A 600 square foot drive at 3 inches compacted is about 11 tons. If a contractor’s tonnage on the invoice comes in well under the geometry, the mat is thinner than specified.
  • Geotextile fabric between subgrade and base, $0.15 to $0.40 per square foot, is close to mandatory over clay. It stops the stone from pumping down into soft soil and losing the base you paid for.

Grading, drainage, and why the edges fail first

Water is what kills asphalt. It gets into the base through cracks and edges, the base softens, the surface loses support, and the failure spreads outward from wherever the water sits.

Grade the driveway to a minimum of 1 to 2 percent of fall, roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot, so water sheds to the sides or to a swale rather than sitting. If your drive runs toward the garage, you need a positive plan for the water: a trench drain across the apron at $60 to $150 per linear foot installed, or a regrade. Edges are the usual first failure and the reason is simple geometry. An asphalt mat has no lateral support at its unconfined edge, so the roller cannot compact it fully, and every tire that rides the edge breaks a little more off. Fixes worth paying for:

  • A compacted shoulder. Backfill both sides with soil or stone level with the mat within a few days of paving. This is the cheapest edge protection there is and it is frequently skipped.
  • A wider base than the asphalt. The aggregate base should extend 6 to 12 inches beyond the paved edge on each side.
  • A beveled edge, cut and rolled at roughly 45 degrees rather than left square.
  • Concrete or paver edging where cars habitually turn off the pavement, $8 to $25 per linear foot.

Also watch the transitions. The joint at the garage slab and the joint at the street or apron are where most driveways start leaking water into the base. Both should be saw-cut clean, tacked, and sealed, and both should be named in the quote.

Sealcoating: cadence, cost, and whether it pays

Sealcoat is a surface treatment. It restores the black color, resists oxidation from UV, and protects against gasoline and oil drips. It does not add structural strength and it does not fix a base problem, no matter how it is sold to you.

  • First seal: 6 to 12 months after installation, not sooner. New asphalt needs time to cure and release lighter oils; sealing too early traps them and gives you a soft surface that scuffs.
  • Then: every 3 to 5 years.
  • Cost: $0.15 to $0.35 per square foot professionally applied, so $180 to $420 on a 1,200 square foot driveway. DIY material is $0.08 to $0.15 per square foot.
  • Crack filling: $0.50 to $2.00 per linear foot, usually with a $200 to $600 minimum. This matters more than sealcoating does, because a sealed crack keeps water out of the base.

Annual sealcoating is a common door-to-door pitch and it is actively harmful. Sealer builds up in layers, becomes brittle, and eventually cracks and peels independently of the asphalt underneath, at which point you are stripping sealer rather than maintaining pavement. Twice a decade, with crack filling as needed in between, is the honest schedule.

Asphalt vs. concrete vs. gravel over 20 years

The honest read: over 20 years asphalt and concrete land in similar territory, and the choice should be made on climate, use, and preference rather than arithmetic. Asphalt is more forgiving of freeze-thaw movement and heaving, cheaper to repair, and can be resurfaced rather than replaced. Concrete lasts longer, handles heavy static loads better, tolerates hot climates without softening, and does not need a recurring seal, but a cracked slab stays cracked and patches never match. Gravel is by far the cheapest over any horizon and requires regrading you will either do yourself or pay for every two to four years.

Paving season and why a late-fall quote is cheaper

Hot mix has to be delivered at temperature and compacted before it cools, which makes asphalt paving genuinely seasonal in most of the country.

  • Peak season runs from late spring through early fall, roughly when daytime temperatures stay above 50°F and the ground is not frozen. Plants are open, mixes are consistent, and compaction is straightforward. This is also when crews are booked six to ten weeks out and prices are firmest.
  • Late fall brings discounts of 5 to 15 percent as crews fill their last weeks and plants clear inventory before closing. The tradeoff is real: cold ambient temperatures shorten the working window, the mat cools faster than the roller can chase it, and a marginal compaction job looks fine in November and ravels in March. If you take a late-season price, put a minimum-temperature clause in writing and accept that the crew may postpone.
  • Winter is off the table for a full install in freezing climates. Plants close. Cold-patch products exist for emergency pothole repair only.
  • Mid-summer heat is fine for placing but the surface stays soft for several days. Keep kickstands, jack stands, and trailer tongues off a new drive for the first month, and be aware that power-steering scrubs on a hot new mat leave permanent marks.

Asphalt binder is a petroleum product, so material pricing tracks crude and can move meaningfully within a single season. A quote more than 30 days old should be reconfirmed.

How to compare paving quotes

Paving bids are short documents describing very different work. Make every bidder state, in writing:

  1. Square footage and the measured dimensions they priced. Verify them yourself.
  2. Base: material spec, compacted depth, lift schedule, and whether existing base is being reused or replaced.
  3. Asphalt: compacted thickness, number of lifts, and mix designation. Binder course and surface course are different mixes.
  4. Tonnage they expect to place. Then check it against the geometry. This is the single most useful number in the bid.
  5. Excavation and disposal. How deep, where the spoil goes, and whether hauling is included.
  6. Grading and drainage plan, stated as a slope percentage or a drop in inches.
  7. Edge treatment and shoulder backfill. Who does it, and when.
  8. Transitions at the garage and the street, including any saw cutting, tack, and sealing.
  9. Compaction equipment. A roller of appropriate weight, not a plate compactor.
  10. Warranty and what voids it. One to three years on workmanship is typical. Ask specifically whether edge raveling and settlement are covered.
  11. Payment schedule. A modest deposit is normal. A demand for most of the money up front, especially from a crew that showed up unannounced with leftover mix, is the oldest paving scam there is.

Then divide each bid by the square footage and compare price per square foot at the same base and thickness spec. If one number is dramatically low, the difference is nearly always base depth, asphalt thickness, or both, and the tonnage line will show it.

Mistakes that blow the budget

  • Paving over a failed base. The most expensive mistake available. A $6,000 overlay that fails in three years buys you a $15,000 tear-out you could have done the first time.
  • Accepting “3 inches” without the word compacted. The difference between 3 inches laid and 3 inches compacted is about 20 percent of your tonnage, and it is the easiest place for a thin bid to hide.
  • Skipping the shoulder backfill. Free to do at the time, $8 to $25 per linear foot to fix with edging after the edges have crumbled.
  • Discovering soft subgrade after excavation. The most common change order on a paving job, usually $800 to $3,500 for undercutting, geotextile, and extra stone. Ask each bidder in advance what their unit price is for undercut and additional base, so the number is agreed before the machine finds it.
  • Driving on it too soon. Stay off for 24 to 72 hours depending on temperature, and keep heavy vehicles off for a couple of weeks. Point loads on fresh asphalt in hot weather leave permanent depressions.
  • Sealcoating in year one, or every year. Both damage the surface. Wait 6 to 12 months, then hold to a 3 to 5 year cadence.
  • Ignoring the water before ignoring the pavement. If a downspout discharges onto the driveway edge or the yard drains across it, fix the water first. Otherwise you are buying a new driveway on the same schedule as the last one.
  • Widening later. Adding a parking pad or turnaround after the fact means a second mobilization charge and a visible cold joint. If you want it, get it in the original scope.

These are 2026 national ranges. Asphalt is more price-volatile than most building materials because the binder tracks crude oil, and hauling distance from the nearest hot mix plant can move a quote 20 percent between two towns in the same county. Base costs are driven by quarry proximity, and labor by local market. Use these figures to interrogate a bid and to know when a number is too good to be structurally real, then get three local quotes written to the same base and thickness specification.
