How it's calculated

No black boxes — here is the exact math behind your estimate, so you can check it or adapt it for your own quote.

  1. 1Roof area = footprint length × width × pitch factor
  2. 2Squares = (roof area ÷ 100) × (1 + waste% ÷ 100)
  3. 3Bundles = ⌈ squares × 3 ⌉
  4. 4Cost = squares × price per square

Frequently asked questions

What is a roofing square?
A square is 100 square feet of roof surface — the standard unit roofers use for ordering and pricing. A typical home roof is 15–30 squares.
Why does pitch matter?
A steeper roof has more surface area than its ground footprint. The pitch factor scales the footprint up to the true sloped area, so steep roofs need more material.
How many bundles are in a square?
Most architectural shingles come three bundles to the square. Always confirm the wrapper, since heavier designer shingles can be four or five bundles per square.
